The Triangle Theory states that when a player speeds up the ball at the kitchen line, the opponent's instinctive counter will travel along a trajectory that forms a predictable triangle with the original speedup path. The ball doesn't come straight back — it deflects at an angle determined by where you targeted relative to the opponent's body and paddle position.
The three sides: (1) your speedup, (2) opponent's reflexive counter, (3) the return angle completing the triangle. Pickleburner estimates ~70% accuracy on instinctive, reactive counters — not deliberate redirections where the opponent has time to choose.
Predictive rules (RH vs RH): Speedup to opponent's forehand → counter to YOUR RIGHT. To their 1-hand backhand → YOUR LEFT. To their 2-hand backhand → YOUR RIGHT (biomechanically functions like a second forehand). Left-handed players reverse all predictions.
At pro level, rallies include 16+ speedups before resolution. Advanced players break the triangle by countering to the origin point.
